Arywin shook her head as she took another sip of her coffee. “More like long night.” She replied rubbing the palm of her hand against her sleepy eyes. “A lot has happened within the last twelve hours.” Her wiriness reflected in her posture and voice. She also hadn’t eaten in a long time either.
Arywin sighed as she took another sip of her coffee. The scent and taste of vanilla filled her senses and seemed to put her at ease. Dr. Maxner sat there in silence sipping his coffee. He seemed to be starring off into space. “Yah I know what you mean.” He finally replied starring down at his coffee cup. “I won’t be getting out of here until around 6 o’clock…this morning.” He added pulling back his sleeve to look at his watch.
Arywin turned her head to look at the clock on the wall. It read 1:27 am. Arywin groaned at the hour. She was usually up at this time but today it seemed like she should have been to bed about five hours ago. Setting her cup on the table, Arywin raised both of her hands to rub the sleep from her eyes.
“So why are you all dressed up this evening?” Dr. Maxner asked. Arywin looked over at him in time to see him run his eyes over her body. She rolled her eyes and dropped her hand to rest around her cup of coffee.
“I had a date earlier and had to cut it short cause of this.” She replied lifting the cup to her lips. Arywin wasn’t sure how much she should tell the doctor. Would he approve or disapprove of her dating a mortal? Also would he be inclined to pity her for doing so? These questions and more raced through her head as she starred down at her half a cup of coffee.
Dr. Maxner cleared his throat. “A date? Really?” He replied while reading her face. She was surprised that he wasn’t trying to read her mind. “I must have been some date to make you dress up that nice.” He added running his eyes over her again. Arywin was sure that if she could blush, her cheeks would have been bright red. She looked down in embarrasment.
“Yah. He’s a great guy. I met him at a club and things have been great since then.” Arywin now looked up at Dr. Maxner. So what if he knew she was dating a mortal. It’s her life and she can do whatever the hell she wants. Dr. Maxner nodded his head.
“Sounds like a great guy. What does he do for a living?” The questions shocked her but she just looked down at her cup to hide her surprise.
“He’s the architect for a huge company here in the city. I can’t think of the name of the company but it’s one of the biggest.” Arywin replied. “Makes about six figures a year. Sometimes seven if he’s the head of the project.”
“Wow.” Dr Maxner said astonished. “So I’m guessing he’s a mortal.” He replied with a blank expression on his face. Arywin studied his face with a challenging expression. Was he going to look down at her for that?
Arywin shrugged. “Yah. So what?” She continued to challenge him and that caused him to look away and take another sip of his coffee. He seemed to drink it very slowly as if to think over his choice of words and reply. He cleared his throat and turned those stunning blue eyes back to her.
“I didn’t mean anything bad by it. If you want to date a mortal, that’s your problem not mine, Arywin. Personally, I think that it’s very brave of you to be dating a mortal. Their thoughts can twist and turn in sudden directions. Plus humans can’t grasp the unknown. If something is confusing to them, they try to push it away thinking it might harm them.”
Arywin listened to what he had to say, taking in every word. She couldn’t believe that Daniel would try to destroy her if he found out. That just didn’t make sense. Arywin shook her head and then looked back at Dr. Maxner. “Dr. Maxner….”
“John, please.”
Arywin paused for a moment. “Alright, John. Would every human try to destroy a vampire if they found out about them?” she asked.
